Don't Stop Taking Resveratrol, Says Top Doc

Newsmaxhealth.com

Sunday, January 22, 2012 1:57 PM
A major scandal erupted this month when a researcher at the University of Connecticut was accused of faulty research — or downright fraud — in at least 26 articles he wrote about the benefits of resveratrol.

Resveratrol, an anti-inflammatory found in the skins of red grapes, has been hailed as the "Fountain of Youth," and is said to fight heart disease, cancer, and other diseases of aging. Some researchers believe the resveratrol contained in red wine is responsible for the “French Paradox” — the apparent ability of the French to eat high-fat diets and drink copious amounts of red wine and still have low rates of heart disease and cancer.
"It has anticancer properties and a powerful ability to protect the brain against immunoexcitotoxicity, the central mechanism in brain aging and neurodegenerative disease of the brain," says Newsmax Health contributor Dr. Russell Blaylock. "Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant that stimulates brain growth and synaptic connections."

Although disturbing, the news that some resveratrol research is in question shouldn't taint the reputation of a valuable heart-healthy nutrient, says Dr. Blaylock. He is in agreement with other scientists and researchers who believe the news will have minimal impact in the field of resveratrol research, since Dr. Dipak K. Das, the scientist in question, isn't a major researcher in the field.
"Dr. Das is NOT the major researcher in resveratrol effects on cardiovascular health," says Dr. Blaylock. "Several of his papers are review papers of other people's research.

"We are not sure what is being questioned," says Blaylock, who notes that "bias and corruption within the ruling medical elite can attack a researcher unfairly." So, in Dr. Blaylock's opinion, the jury is still out on Das's guilt.
Das's research aside, the overwhelming amount of research from other sources found that resveratrolis, in fact, an effective nutrient. "There are 4,460 research and review papers listed on PubMed that are published from labs from all over the world," says Dr. Blaylock. "They are finding a tremendous effectiveness of resveratrol on cardiovascular health, neuroprotection, and usefulness in cancer prevention and treatment.

"That means that greater than 99.9 percent of the research done on resveratrol is from labs completely independent of Das' lab or his institution."

The media adds to the confusion when stories like the resveratrol story break, says Dr. Blaylock. "The media wants to make the most exciting headline they can — so they write such nonsense as 'resveratrol research faked: forget that glass of wine,'" says Dr. Blaylock. "Ironically, they are committing a more glaring fraud than the person they are writing about.

"It would have taken them no more than 10 minutes to find what I did — that 99.9 percent of the research is totally independent of Das' research, and virtually all of it finds resveratrol to be effective and safe."

There is also the problem that so many of the media's advertising dollars come from the pharmaceutical makers of statins, says Dr. Blaylock: "They have a vested interest in reporting a story that would destroy the resveratrol market. Again, this is glaring fraud by the media. The purpose of journalism is to dig out the truth — to carefully analyze a story and provide the real story to the public," says Blaylock. All too often, the media doesn't do its job, he says.

As for himself and his patients, "I will continue to take resveratrol and recommend it," he says.

Walnuts May Help Lower Breast Cancer Risk

(NaturalNews) A new study conducted by a team of researchers at Marshall University, and recently published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, has revealed that just modest, daily amounts of walnuts are sufficient to significantly lower the risk of breast cancer in mice.

To test the anti-cancer properties of walnuts, the mice involved in this study were genetically altered to develop breast cancer at an accelerated rate. The study evaluated the effects of dieting with and without walnuts, across the entire life-span of two tested groups of mice - one group was fed walnuts from conception to weaning, through the mothers, and later received walnuts directly into its daily diet, while a control group of mice was fed a regular diet, without walnuts.
Elaine Hardman, associate professor of biochemistry at Marshall's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, who led this research project, firmly believes in the possible health benefits of foods, stating that "food is important medicine in our diet".

What we put into our bodies makes a big difference, it determines how the body functions, our reaction to illness and health. The simple stuff really works: eat right, get off the couch, and turn off the TV. The results of her study stand to support her claims: the mice that were fed small amounts of walnuts had developed cancer at less than half the rate of the mice that had been fed a regular diet.

Moreover, the test mice that did develop cancer eventually had much smaller and less frequent tumors, suggesting than walnuts effectively slowed down cancer progression, even where a genetic predisposition existed. Hardman trusts that the walnuts' high content of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and, more notably, cholesterol lowering phytosterols, is to be credited for these amazing results in mice.

Moreover, vitamin E consumption and breast cancer development seem to be inversely proportional - the more vitamin E the mice consumed, the slower their cancerous tumors developed. Hardman also added that the walnut amounts given to the test group throughout the trial would equate to roughly 2 ounces of walnuts per day for average humans.

While scientific studies such as this one cannot accurately determine whether the health benefits documented are a direct result of something that is added to the diet, rather than of something that is removed from it, Hardman reminds us that additional studies conducted in the past support her hypothesis as well.

Walnuts, especially when raw, have the highest content of antioxidants in all known nuts, in addition to other cancer-fighting substances. At a closer look, Hardman's research team discovered that the very gene activity of the test mice, who were fed walnuts daily, had changed significantly in several areas believed to be relevant to breast cancer development.
Although the information revealed by Hardman's study is, without a doubt, gladdening, other members of the scientific community are still skeptical regarding the extent to which such data is relevant to humans.

Numerous variables, such as smoking, pollution, physical fitness, and lifestyle, make accurate prognoses on humans very difficult, as deputy director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, D.C, Peter G. Shields observed, reminding us that while beta-carotene may fight against cancer in non-smokers, it is actually detrimental to the health of smokers.

JES Organics Company Updates on Organic Skin Care Products

Well, I have been using the new Vitamin B3 Treatment serum for a week now and I am very excited with my own personal results.  I wanted it more for aging and sun spots and some hyperpigmentation from the sun on my neck.  However, in addition to using it on my face and neck, I also used it on a very itchy raised skin lesion on my forearm that I have had since April and couldn't get rid of.  I put the Vitamin B3 Treatment serum on that and within 24 hours, the itching stopped and within 48 hours, it was flat and almost gone.  I had a raised enlarged pore on my cheek that always bothered me and that is flat now in 72 hours and has almost disappeared.  I feel like my skin is noticeably more tone after applying the serum and I can't wait to see how it combats fine lines and sun spots in a few months.

JES Organics Organic Skin Care Line was previously called Belle Peau Anti-Aging.  We have made the decision to change the name to Ageless Skin Care because our products are really good for all skin types.  We were hearing from our customers that moms were buying our skin care to prevent premature aging and that their teenagers were finding that it really helped their acneic prone skin.  And there is lots of research to support that the ingredients we use in our products works well for a broad spectrum of skin care types and issues.  Please be patient with us as we update the labels and web-site photos with the new products/information.

Our Organically Preserved Body Lotion is also back now by popular demand.  This lotion was previously under our Belle Peau line but will now be under the new Ageless Line.

Compare our ingredients to the top selling Skin Care lines and you will see we have power packed skin care ingredients while still being natural, organic, organically preserved and non-toxic.  Because we are anti-corporate greed, you will find that our prices are very affordable and you can't beat the quality.  All of our products are FRAGRANCE FREE, PARABEN FREE, SULFATE FREE, NON-TOXIC. Rated 0-2 by Skin Deep for Safety and Toxicity.

We added this new Vitamin B3 Treatment serum to our Ageless Skin Care Line based on the ingredients, organically preserved, quality, and all of the research supporting the benefits of these ingredients.  During my research with these ingredients and the Vitamin B3, I found it fascinating that a single product could work for the whole spectrum of skin types from acneic prone to anti-aging.  At JES Organics, we love it when we can keep it simple and have products that work for all age groups.

We have discontinued the Exfoliant even though it was an excellent product, we find that the majority of people have very busy lives and want to keep it as simple as possible.  Our Ageless 2 in 1 Cleanser gently exfoliates and cleanses at the same time eliminating that extra step.

In the near future, we will be replacing the Nutrient Rich Beet Masque with a Creamy Detoxification Masque.  The Nutrient Rich Beet Masque is great for all skin types and helps to pull toxins from the skin and pores.  It is a powder masque that can be mixed with water, soy milk, yogurt or any liquid that is good for the skin.  With Beet Powder, Vitamins B and C this masque is well rounded and mild for all skin types. This is on sale for just a limited time.

Beet Powder is extremely rich in iron, potassium, niacin, copper, vitamin A, vitamin C, folic acid, biotin, niacin, zinc, phosphorus, sodium, calcium, manganese, magnesium and contains phosphorus. Beets provide a natural source of phosphate of copper which is necessary for the skin to stretch.

Topical application of Niacinamide (B3) has been shown to increase Ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin and to prevent skin from losing water content. It will decrease itching, inflammation, help acne affected skin, decrease oiliness, alleviate atopic dermatitis, decrease UV-induced skin cancers and help decrease facial pigmentation.

Whether the goal is fighting wrinkles and age spots or eradicating stubborn acne, cosmetic manufacturers are turning to an old vitamin that seems to be learning new skin care tricks. Niacinamide, aka vitamin B3, is popping up in moisturizers, eye creams, anti aging serums, and acne treatments, as scientists continue to unlock this nutrient's beauty benefits.

Vitamin B5 improves the moisture-retention capacity of the skin and stimulates skin regeneration. Dry skin stays supple and elastic for longer. It has an anti-inflammatory and anti-itching effect.

Ascorbyl Palmitate is found naturally in fruits and green vegetables and is essential for normal metabolism, wound healing, and tissue repair. Solubility enables this form of Vitamin C to reach the surface of the skin rapidly in amounts greater than can be achieved by water soluble Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid), therefore providing readily available form of Vitamin C to skin. It can be used by individuals who have normally sensitive skin.

Kaolin Clay - the mildest of all clays. It is suitable for sensitive skin. It helps stimulate circulation to the skin while gently exfoliating and cleansing it. It does not draw oils from the skin and can therefore be used on dry skin types.

Bentonite Clay is a highly absorbent clay that pulls toxins from the skin.
